Sage Vaughn’s Ring Cycle series stretches across the past 10 years. It was first shown in MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary during the Transmission LA exhibition curated by Mike D of the Beastie Boys. Although the original inspiration was derived from the opening sequence in Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle opera (Der Ring des Nibelungen), the series has come to resonate with viewers on a number of levels. The dwarf Alberich dives into the Rhine River and steals the Rhinemaidens' magic gold; he then forges a ring that gives its wearer the power to rule the world. With these pieces, Sage works to take a natural subject and create a new synthetic form, imbuing it with new power. Recently, these works have become portals or passages from dark to light, day to night, waking to dream, death to life, etc.

The winning bid is tax-deductible, minus the fair market value ($16,000).
